This event is open to everyone regardless of rugby (or other team sport) experience.

The Quake is a club dedicated to bringing rugby to those who have been traditionally left out, with special interest to gay/bi men and men of color. Our club is a mix of straight and gay players who focus on the competitive sport of rugby while developing a sense of fraternity. All are welcome.

The practice will last for two hours with much of that consisting of a beginner’s introduction to the sport. There will be running, ball handling, and some basic skills instruction. After practice we will go to one of our team sponsors, R-Place, for some free beer and food. There, you will be able to socialize with the members of the Quake and learn more about this amazing sport.

Interested participants should bring: water, shorts, a dispensable t-shirt, and running shoes or cleats. Also, dry cloths to change into for the post practice social.

Website Problems

Due to some kind of server error we cannot log into and update our website. The match between the Seattle Quake RFC and Kitsap RFC (a.k.a. OPSU) kicked off at 1pm (after a quick readjustment of an incorrectly drawn 50 meter line) to a crowd of approximately 50 spectators. The play hovered in the Quake end of the pitch for most of the first half, with Quake playing a respectable defensive game, capably defending the try line on several plays. Tackling was effective, with several guys delivering significant hits; Hooker John, Inside Center Brian Roth, and Fullback Wim Gates had strong tackling games. The opposition scored three times in the first half with no conversions. They had one sub (blood); Seattle had no subs in the first half.

The forwards were both our strong suit (winning our set scrums as well as many of Kitsap’s) as well as our weak suit (not winning possession at the rucks). The tight five consisted of Richard, John, Milly, Rich, and Matt, with Chris and Joseph flanking, and Conrad at the 8 man position. Jeremy played scrum half, Brodie played fly half. The backs played well, especially considering their inexperience as a unit. Paul and Jesson were at wing, with Brian and Kirk at inside and outside centers, and Wim at fullback. The half time score was 15 - 0 the Quake trailing.

The second half forced Quake to play the uphill slope of the uneven pitch, and Davo subbed for Richard at loose prop, and Travis subbed for Paul at wing. Kitsap tried twice with one conversion within the first 8 minutes of the half. Rich was injured 15 minutes into the half, and Etch subbed for him at lock. Other subs in the second half included Jeff W. for Brian, Doug for Conrad, and Brad for Matt. The opposition scored twice more with one conversion, and late in the half Davo went out with an ankle injury. With only one minute left in the half, Brodie tried and converted with the help of the forwards pushing the maul backwards over their try line (and down to a seven man scrum at that!), making the final score Kitsap 39 and Seattle Quake 7.

Kitsap hosted the third half at the Horse and Cow with beer and wings. Chris Peguero was named Man of the Match. We ended the last 45 minutes of drink up with rugby songs, and drink up ended around 6pm.

Mark Shone, Club President
Seattle Quake RFC

Quake vs Avalanche | October 20th

| 21
| 0

Unfortunately, Avalanche forfeited. A very nice pitch at Agnes Stewart Middle School in Springfield.

This has been a well fought match over the years with varying scorelines. Today was no exception. Eugene clearly had faster backs. The Quake struggled during the 1st quarter and allowed Eugene to score 4 times with 3 conversions during the 1st 23 minutes. They managed to hold Eugene scoreless for the final 17 minutes. Halftime score 24-0.

The 2nd half started off tightly contested. Just at the end of the 3rd quarter of play, Eugene had scored 3 times with 2 conversions. Eugene was starting to click pretty well at this point. The Quake were visably tired & frustrated. We had a much better position though, 50th instead of 164th. There is nothing quite like running drills in front of thousands of people cheering for you!

We had brought four and a half boxes of calendars to get pass out and they went really fast! Soon everyone was rucking, srumming, passing, running line-outs and star drills in the intersections.

Our VP Jeff Wilson said, "The solidarity that we showed as a team and the energy and excitement that we have about the best sport in the world was very evident to the 50,000 people lining the sides of 4th Avenue today. It was great to ruck and pass and play rugby through the streets of Seattle with the best group of guys in the sport. We had quite a few people remark at the Festival that it is really clear that we love playing the sport and we should see some of the benefits at the NPO and when our season starts in September."

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9pwl33Y9EkM/Rh2bli6tCjI/AAAAAAAAAA4/-mzLTS0sdY0/s320/8245.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5052365426310056498" />
Apr 07, 2005 - Bend vs. Quake
72 - 17
Match Report - Submitted by Chunn

Pitch in good shape, well marked and fully roped off. Quake travelled well, with 20 spending the night. Set scrums controlled by Quake until the end of the game, lineouts went to Bend as well as most loose play. Bend's backs were connecting very well, but Quake had their glory moments as well. Bend's Mike Hunter was too hard to stop, scoring 4 tries fom OC. Very disciplined game, I'd be suprised if total penalties exceeded 10. Fifty degrees, mild wind and dry: great for play, a little cool on the sidelines.

Quake vs. Avalanche Match Report

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9pwl33Y9EkM/Rh2awS6tCiI/AAAAAAAAAAw/SEZ5Q3hC6Iw/s320/IMG_1653.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5052364511482022434" />
Mar 17, 2005 - Men's Division III
Avalanche vs. Quake
0-102

The Avalanche kept it close until they ended up down a man due to injury. The Quake has a scrum that has become increasingly powerful. With the exception of around 10 minutes in the second half they dominated the Eugene scrum; however, their use of that tool was not always used to the most effective results. Eugene had powerful runners that were breaking the gainline, and had a more dynamic attack off of loose play. The results was a match that on the scoreline consistently favored Eugene, but always left the fans wondering who would come out on top.

Eugene's captain and scrumhalf opened the scoring by having the Quake pay for an infraction 12 minutes in with a penalty kick from the about the 22 meter. Ten minutes later the Eugene #8 took a Quake lineout and scored from 22 meters out. Defense took hold by both teams and this took us to half time with a 8-0 Eugene lead.

At the 50 minute mark, the Eugene scrumhalf pressed the lead by picking up a loose ball and diving in for a try which he converted. The Quake pushed and had multiple scrums close to the Eugene tryline and finally got a score when the 8 man picked at the 57th minute. He converted his own score taking us to a 15 - 7 with 23 minutes left.

The Quake threatened often through the power of the scrum and their prowess through most of the lineouts. However, they could not take this set piece play and translate it to points.

The match ended with a Eugene try at the 80th minute when the left winger finished a movement started when the ball was stolen from a Quake player. The scrumhalf converted from the converter and left Eugene up 22-7.

St. Patricks' Day Match in Portland

This Saturday (March 17th, 2007) Quake will be taking their annual trek to Portland to do battle with the Avalanche. Bend had jumped out to a quick 12 - 0 lead 6 minutes in, but the Quake's defense stiffened up and it was not until 7 minutes left in the first half that Bend managed another score.

The Quake had the superior scrum at each scrummage, but the backs were unable to take the possession and translate it into points. Lineouts on the other hand were not a Quake strong point, and Bend took almost all throws.

In the second half, the Quake tackling started to suffer and Bend added 6 tries. Their passes back in from the fly to forwards in support sucked in backs and allowed the next phase to find gaps to exploit.

The Quake ended the match on a positive note as one of the best formed mauls I have seen in some time was executed. Bend's apparently only way to stop it was to collapse it, and a quick tap resulted in a Quake try.

I have not seen either team play in a long time, so these thoughts may be known by all. Bend is a hard running team - they take the ball on the run and don't slow down when they go into contact. The result is that they can get the defense on their back feet.

The Quake should really take more advantage of the maul. I think I only saw them consciously work on a maul that they wanted to move once - and that was an unstoppable maul. Their rucks did not produce as good ball as that maul could have had they decided to do that. And their scrums were great - should they decide to, they could take every put in as their wheel was very good, they only decided to use it a few times.

Lots of fun and look forward to refereeing these teams again.

Ref's Match Report - Oct 28, 2005

Men's Division III
Eugene vs. Quake
41 - 19
Referee Higby

This Pitch was exceptional! very well marked with a good rope system on both sides of the pitch, even though only a touch judge was on the far side.

This was set to be a great match considering quake's play this season. everyone that came to watch (about 100) saw a very close well fought match. these two teams came together testing each other in every way. that included a little referring to pull everyone in line. eugene scored
1st @ 12 minutes. the battle continued until quake scored & Leading 17-12 at half-time, Quake effectively sealed the result with a try direct from the re-start . At no time did Budd Bay lose heart, much to their credit, and they did get a consolation third try, but Quake ran in four more to come out emphatic winners.

There were no ropes on either side of the field, a problem which should be addressed soon. We had no photographer, but this time we took notes to report here:

The first match was against Chilliwack Crusaders. Some highlights were Joseph winning 3 scrums that were Chilliwack's puts as well as keeping possesion off all of ours. George had a excellent kick that placed the ball right in the center in front of the uprights. Xave and Jeremy chased with a Crusader in front trying to get there first. Unfortunately for him he gave in to pressure and rushed his kick. The ball bounced off the uprights back at him and he kicked again. The ball only bobbled away and Jeremy was able to chase and touch it down for his first try ever. Kirk had a try and a conversion, Brodie tried twice and convered his as well. Xave had a great totally forward freak-out pass that everyone had a laugh about. Excellent Touch Judging by Jerry Gent.

Final score: Chilliwack-5; Fat Cocks-26

Our second match was scheduled to be against Division 3 rivals OPSU from Bremerton. Unfortunatly only 2 of their team showed up to the tournament. We played against some of the same Chilliwack players as well as a Chuckanut B and a few others. We continued to play well, winning scrums and handling their offense with tempered defence. They scored twice on us, converting both times, but we answered with the same scoring as the previous match; Brodie 2, Kirk 1 both converting and Jeremy had a breakaway for another try, but he can't drop-kick for shit so he did not convert despite trying in the exact center of the uprights. Some anti-highlights were Brian stiff-arming a 14 year-old (ok, he was 19) and Jeremy breaking away again, getting to the center again, and dropping the ball for a knock-on instead of a try...much to the delight of the beer garden right in front of him. More Excellent Touch Judging by Jerry Gent.

Final Score: Whores-14; Fat Cocks-26

The final match was versus the Huna Hogs, a team that apparently requires their members to be old and fat. But they also have played a lot of rugby and don't mess around. In a match off of mauls, stiff arms and tries (all by them) The Fat Cocks walked away a bit bruised and worked, but it was a fun match. Thank God for Ray showing up for the final match, and Conrad coming in for Jeremy they were the only ones with the bulk to even start to go up against the chubby bastards, even then they looked small next to them. Brian, Jeremy and Kirk got stiffed and all got tackled and smooshed. In one play Brodie was lifted for a line out and an old fat dude grabbed him in the air, dragged him down and held on. Brodie decided to hang on too and they both just kinda stayed there for a bit struggling to get up. The ref seemed to never called any of these wonderful fouls...but what are you gunna do? Jerry's Touch Judging this game sucked, as seen in the results...

Final Score: Huna Hogs-7 tons; Fat Cocks-1,400 lbs

So Fat Cocks took 2nd in the Division 3 bracket of the tourney, with the best performance yet.
